Stuart Whitehurst

Stuart P. Whitehurst, ASA

Stuart P. Whitehurst is an Accredited Senior Appraiser (ASA) with the American Society of Appraisers. Since 1984, Stuart has been an appraiser of personal property, providing appraisals for trust and estate lawyers and financial professionals, museums and historical societies, and private individuals for estate planning and settlement, donation and gift tax purposes. His expertise is exceptionally wide-ranging with extensive experience appraising paintings, prints and sculpture, European and Asian antiques, furniture and decorative arts, silver, coins and currency, books, and manuscripts.

A veteran of the auction industry, Stuart began his career at Sotheby’s in New York where he appraised and cataloged for the departments of Latin American Art, Prints & Multiples, Arcade, and English Furniture. He then went on to establish Leslie Hindman Auctioneers’ first branch in West Palm Beach, Florida, before moving back north to Skinner Auctioneers and Appraisers in Massachusetts. At Skinner, Stuart spent seventeen years as the Senior Appraiser in the Appraisals Department, the Director of the Books and Manuscripts department, a specialist in the European Furniture and Decorative Arts department, as well as a principal auctioneer. In 2011, Stuart established himself as an independent personal property appraiser in Florida, where he has since partnered with Sara C. Wishart to form Whitehurst & Wishart Appraisal Services, LLC.

Stuart is a familiar face on the long-running and popular PBS television series Antiques Roadshow, having appeared as an appraiser on the show since its premiere in 1997. He has also appeared in numerous national and regional television and radio broadcasts including Today and The Ellen DeGeneres Show, speaking about the world of antiques and collecting. He has been a featured speaker at innumerable antiques-related events throughout the country, and has served as the auctioneer for an array of charitable events; Stuart currently holds a Florida auctioneers license.

With his broad and varied background in the art and antique industry, Stuart provides comprehensive, user-friendly tangible personal property appraisals conducted in compliance with USPAP, the Uniform Standards for Professional Appraisal Practice. Stuart also frequently advises his clients on the best methods and procedures for sale and dispersal of single items or whole collections held by families and trust groups.

Sara Wishart

Sara Wishart, GG, AAA

Sara C. Wishart is a Gemological Institute of America (GIA) Graduate Gemologist (GG) and a Certified Member of the Appraisers Association of America (AAA). Sara appraises jewelry as well as household contents, fine art, antique furniture and decorations, and silver. Sara’s wide-ranging knowledge base in tangible personal property, coupled with a specialty in jewelry, is a rare combination in the appraisal world.

As a personal property appraiser, Sara worked for 14 years in the auction industry, specializing in British and European furniture and decorative arts, fine silver and objets de vertu, as well as fine books and manuscripts. Since 2011, Sara has been an independent personal property appraiser based in Florida, where she has since partnered with Stuart P. Whitehurst to form Whitehurst & Wishart Appraisal Services, LLC.

Sara has appeared as a decorative arts and silver appraiser on the popular PBS television program Antiques Roadshow. Sara holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Middlebury College, and an M.Phil. in furniture and decorative arts from the University of Glasgow, taught in conjunction with Christie’s Education. Sara’s appraisal work is conducted in compliance with USPAP, the Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice.
